Georgetown. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Guyana President Mohammed Irfan Ali on Wednesday held talks on a range of issues with a focus on strengthening ties. Also, India and Guyana have agreed to increase cooperation in the fields of defence, trade, energy, pharma and agriculture. Both sides signed five agreements which are based on providing cooperation in various sectors like hydrocarbons, healthcare, culture and agriculture.
While talking to the media, PM Modi said that Guyana will play an important role in India’s energy security and a framework will be prepared for a long-term partnership between the two countries in this field. He said that the visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana after 56 years is an important milestone in bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Modi reached here from Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday night. PM Modi participated in the G-20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. PM Modi said, “We have identified several new initiatives to enhance India-Guyana cooperation.”
The Prime Minister stressed that both sides will make tireless efforts to promote economic cooperation. “India is an important source of pharmaceutical products for Guyana and we will work to increase pharmaceutical exports to Guyana,” he said. PM Modi also said that the close cooperation between the two countries in the field of defense is a symbol of ‘deep mutual trust’.
The two leaders also discussed regional and global issues. PM Modi said that India and Guyana agree that all problems should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. President Ali said that Modi’s visit to Guyana is an important milestone in enhancing cooperation between the two countries. Irfan Ali described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a champion among leaders for his effective leadership and contribution to the developing world.
