New Delhi. Travel major Oyo has implemented a new ‘check-in’ policy for partner hotels, starting from Meerut. According to this, unmarried couples will no longer be allowed to ‘check-in’. That means only husband and wife will be able to take a room in the hotel. Under the revised policy, all couples will be asked to provide valid proof of their relationship at the time of ‘check-in’. This also includes bookings done online. The company said Oyo has empowered its partner hotels to reject bookings from unmarried couples at their discretion in keeping with local social sensitivities.
Oyo has directed its partner hotels in Meerut to ensure this with immediate effect. People familiar with the policy change said that depending on the ground response, the company may expand it to more cities. “OYO had earlier also received feedback from social groups to resolve this issue, especially in Meerut,” he said. Additionally, residents of some other cities have also demanded that unmarried couples not be allowed to check-in at Oyo hotels.
“OYO is committed to maintaining safe and responsible hospitality practices,” Pavas Sharma, region head, OYO North India, told PTI. We respect individual freedoms, but we also recognize our responsibility to listen to and work with law enforcement and civil society groups in these markets.” He said the company will review this policy and its policy from time to time.
