Islamabad. Pakistan’s federal authorities have banned gatherings of five or more people and all other types of gatherings in the capital and surrounding areas for two months in view of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party’s planned protest. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had last week announced that it would hold a demonstration in Islamabad on November 24 to force the government to release its founder Imran Khan, who has been jailed for more than a year. The federal government then imposed Section 144 in Islamabad, under which the gathering of people is banned.
According to various notifications issued by the office of Islamabad District Magistrate Usman Ashraf on Monday, Section 144 has been imposed as some elements of the society are planning to assemble unlawfully which may disrupt public peace. Under the notification, public gatherings of five or more people are banned as they ‘may endanger public peace and harmony, endanger human life and safety, create danger to public property’ Are and … may cause riot or affray including communal riots within the revenue/territorial limits of Islamabad District.
