Following the victory of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in the country’s recent presidential elections, the Sri Lankan Army ordered the closure of its camp in Paruthithurai in the northern Tamil region of Sri Lanka. The order issued by the Army Headquarters stated that the camp should be closed and the land returned to its original owners within two weeks.

The Paruthithurai camp, which was reportedly established in 1995 during the height of the civil war to monitor and disrupt supply chains to the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam), remained operational even after the conflict ended. The Army continued to maintain camps to monitor potential threats, including activities of LTTE-linked organizations and supply of weapons through the sea. Army troops began vacating the complex on Monday evening, the first step towards fulfilling the President’s commitment.
