Trump announces names of US ambassadors to NATO, Canada

US President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday nominated Acting Attorney General Matthew G Whitaker and former Canadian MP Pete Hoekstra for US Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Hoekstra represented Michigan’s Second District in Congress (U.S. Parliament) for nearly 20 years. During this period, he was also the Chairman of the Intelligence Committee of the House of Representatives.

Trump said Whitaker will ensure that American interests are advanced and protected. “Mathieu will strengthen ties with our NATO allies and firmly confront threats to peace and stability,” he said. He will take America to new heights.

“In my second term, Pete (former Congressman Pete Hoekstra) will once again help me lead America to greater heights,” he said. He did an outstanding job during our first four years as U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands, and I am confident he will continue to better represent our country in this new role.
